Barnard Castle Band 05/05/2019
Like all bands from the early or mid 19th century, details of just how these bands were formed are almost impossible to find. What is recorded is that Barnard Castle Subscription Band provided the music at the laying of Whorlton Bridge foundation stone on the 18th of June 1829.
Since then the band has gone through many changes, with the final change coming in 1973 as the band reformed with an influx of young players.
Teesdale Travel Bureau, in 1981, commissioned Goff Richards to write a piece for the band - this “Barnard Castle March” is known and played around the world.
Andrew Nicholson, who had also been a member of the 1973 band, is the current musical director.
